Asian styles have long been attractive to Western women. For example, the sexy and alluring cheongsam dress, a tight, figure-hugging garment with slits up the sides (as much to allow movement as to display a bit of leg) that was popular with upper-class women and female celebrities in Shanghai in the 1920s made some considerable inroads among American woman in the 1960s. The nehru suit is one example of something that is both exotic and retro as well as suitable for social occasions that call for something semi-formal, yet allows a man to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

The Nehru suit combines Chinese and East Indian flair, with a high mandarin-style collar and a button-down front. A similar jacket was worn by the first Prime Minister of modern India, Jawaharlal Nehru (hence the name), in the late 1940s. Interestingly, this type of garment was first developed in the late 1700s when what is now India and Pakistan became part of the British Empire; it was an attempt by Punjabi nobles to look more “Western.”

And you want to talk about retro? Remember that recently we posted an entry about Mad Men and the slick, 1960s “Don Draper” look. Well, there was another side to the 60s (if you remember it, you probably weren't there). That was the “mod” movement. Thanks largely to popular, high-profile musical groups of the era such as the Beatles and the Monkees, nehru suits became all the rage with young men during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
